Notifications

Barvol notifications keep you informed about important events in your workspace — overdue tasks, at-risk goals, new feedback, and more — without overwhelming you with noise. This page explains how to configure notifications to match your working style.

Notification channels

Barvol can deliver notifications through two channels:

  • In-app — the notification bell in the top-right corner of the Barvol sidebar. In-app notifications are always active and cannot be disabled.
  • Email — daily and weekly digests, and high-priority alerts sent to your registered email address.
  • Slack — notifications sent to a Slack channel of your choice, if the Slack integration is connected.

Notification types

Notification types are grouped into three categories in Settings:

Operational alerts:

  • Task overdue — triggered when a task passes its due date without being marked done
  • Goal at risk — triggered when Barvol detects a goal is unlikely to be met on time
  • Milestone approaching — triggered 2 days before a milestone due date
  • Decision review due — triggered on the review date you set for a decision

Digest notifications:

  • Daily briefing — a morning summary of today's tasks, events, and open items
  • Weekly synthesis — sent Monday morning with last week's synthesis report

Activity notifications:

  • New feedback logged — when a feedback entry is created by any workspace member
  • New task assigned to you — when a teammate assigns you a task
  • Goal status change — when any goal's status is updated
  • Integration sync error — when a connected integration fails to sync

Configuring notifications

Go to Account Settings and select the Notifications tab. Each notification type has a toggle for each channel (Email, Slack). Enable only the channels you want for each type.

For email notifications, you can also set the daily briefing time — the hour at which the daily briefing email is sent. The default is 8:00 AM in your account's timezone.

Do not disturb

If you are heads-down on a project and want to pause all non-critical notifications temporarily, enable Do Not Disturb from the notification bell menu in the sidebar. While active, only integration sync errors and task assignments are delivered. All other notifications are queued and delivered when you disable Do Not Disturb.

Do Not Disturb can be set to turn off automatically after 1 hour, 4 hours, 8 hours, or at the end of the current day.

Notification preferences vs. workspace settings

Notification preferences are per-user, not per-workspace. Each workspace member manages their own notification settings. A workspace owner cannot configure notifications on behalf of another member.

TipEnable the daily briefing email and the weekly synthesis. These two notifications alone are enough to stay informed without being interrupted during the day. Add overdue task and goal-at-risk alerts only if you actively manage tasks in Barvol.
